Last weekend, I was entertained by the Confessions of a Shopaholic and the quirkiness of Rebecca Bloomwood. I highly recommend the film to anyone who loves fashion and shopping, or just wants to see a fun novel come to life on the big screen. If you have already seen the movie, you probably noticed the awesome array of outfits that  fab Costume Designer Patricia Field created for our favorite shopping addict. Field, who has worked for the Sex and the City series and the Sex and the City Movie, created ensembles of trendy labels and vintage pieces in bold colors for Bloomwood’s eclectic wardrobe.

Fabsugar shows how to re-create one of my favorite looks, which shows a more casual side to the lovable Becky Bloomwood. You can copy her style with a  buffalo plaid dress, at an affordable price at Forever 21. The fun side to the outfit are the accessories, such as the popular wide cinched belt. I found a similar belt on sale at Bluefly.com. Isla Fisher in Confessions of a Shopaholic

Happy Valentine’s Day! How did you enjoy the day? I thought that it would be fun to go to a movie, and I was glad that I did. My Sweetie and I went to see Confessions of a Shopaholic today. The film, which opened in theaters nationwide this weekend, is based on the book series written by Sophie Kinsella. The story is about lovable, feisty and debt-ladened Rebecca Bloomwood, wonderfully portrayed by Isla Fisher. Becky has the irrestible urge to shop all the time and for whatever strikes her fancy. I loved seeing the joy on her face as she walked into Barneys, and left with a big smile and lots of shopping bags. Labels like Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin and Gucci are important parts of her wardrobe, and her closet is spilling over with hangbags and shoes. The unfortunate thing is that Becky can’t afford any of it. She charges almost everything, is plagued by relentless debt collectors, and secretly hopes that someone else has stolen her credit card so that she isn’t the person responsible for a $900 bill!

However, her spending sprees do not go unnoticed by her best friend, Suze, played by Krysten Ritter, who is concerned about Becky’s purchases and her unpaid rent. I really empathized with Becky, especially when she is trying so hard to will herself away from the beautiful items in the store windows by telling herself that she doesn’t need these temptations. She struggles to adopt a new philosophy about affordable fashion, as the sensible way to spend and still have enough to save a nice little nest egg for her future. However, her editor doesn’t welcome her story ideas about fashion on a budget. Who wants to read about such a subject, when it is more fun to shop until she reaches her credit limit?

Becky’s style is very fashionable, but when she doesn’t need the expensive labels and the latest dress to feel faboulous, she stops her foolish surrender to the high interest rates on her plastic cards. No longer needing the thrill of overspending, Becky discovers that being fashionable isn’t equal to spending money and putting herself in the black hole of debt. What I like best about the movie is that you get to know a young woman who has the same struggle with spending that many of us fashionistas can identify with. She is learning, like many of us, that affordable fashion is not just a new trend because of tough financial times. It is a new way of living without a pile of heavy debt.
